“The Handmaid’s Tale” Renewed for Season 2 at Hulu

“The Handmaid’s Tale” has been renewed for a second season! Congratulations to Yvonne and the rest of the cast & crew!

Just one week after its debut, Hulu has renewed “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a second season, Variety has learned. Season 2 will premiere in 2018.

The renewal will be announced Wednesday at Hulu’s Upfront presentation.

According to Hulu, which did not release numbers, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been watched by more Hulu viewers than any other series premiere on the platform, considering both original and acquired series.

Aside from viewership success, the show has received widespread critical acclaim, with Variety‘s awards editor Kristopher Tapley penning a recent column about the series titled, “Does Hulu Finally Have A Serious Emmy Contender?” Variety TV critic Sonia Saraiya called the drama “a worthy, heartbreaking adaptation of the text, anchored by strong performances and profound visual grammar” in her review.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, “The Handmaid’s Tale” follows the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Elisabeth Moss stars alongside Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Down, O.T. Fagbenle, Max Minghella, and Samira Wiley.

“The response we’ve seen to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in just one week since its premiere has been absolutely incredible. It has been an honor to work with this talented team of cast and creators to develop a series that has struck such a chord with audiences across the country,” said Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP and head of content. “As we continue to expand our strong slate of original programming, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers. We can’t wait to explore the world of Gilead and continue Margaret’s vision with another season on Hulu.”

“Handmaid’s Tale” is created, executive produced, and written by Bruce Miller. Warren Littlefield serves as executive producer and Atwood is a consulting producer on the series. MGM Television produces.

“The Handmaid’s Tale’s” Yvonne Strahovski on Serena Joy’s Role in the Rise of Gilead

Check out this interview Yvonne did with Cosmopolitan about “The Handmaid’s Tale” and her character Serena Joy. This interview contains spoilers if you have not watch the first three episodes that are now available on Hulu!

There’s a reason people are comparing Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale to our current political climate: It’s about a world where women’s rights are stripped away in a totalitarian return to “traditional values.” It also features protests, terrorism, and a character who’s already drawn comparisons to Ivanka Trump and the 53 percent of white women who voted for her father: the Commander’s wife, Serena Joy.

In the book, Serena Joy is an older woman who walks with a cane and shows no remorse for her role in the rise of Gilead (she was a gospel star who preached about the sanctity of the home). On the show, she’s closer in age to her handmaiden, Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss), and seems at least a little bit contrite, however unforgivable. (She was once an author who wrote about “domestic feminism.” That backfired.) Here, Yvonne Strahovski talks about adapting her character for TV and why Serena Joy is a cautionary tale.

How does Serena Joy being closer in age to Offred change their dynamic?

Yvonne: It offers so much to play with, in terms of the power play, because you have these two women, and one is at the top of the food chain in terms of women in this society, and the other one is at the bottom. Maybe they could have been friends outside the world of Gilead, but they’re not allowed to be now, and they’re pitted against each other. Exploring that, it was so fascinating; I had so many surprise moments with Lizzy when we were shooting scenes, things came up that we didn’t think were going to be there. Yvonne Strahovski Joins Shane Black’s ‘The Predator’

Yvonne Strahovski, perhaps best known to audiences for starring on NBC’s Chuck for five seasons, is in final negotiations to join the cast of The Predator, 20th Century Fox’s reboot of the sci-fi action franchise.

Shane Black is directing the movie, which began production Monday in Vancouver. He also co-wrote the script with Fred Dekker.

Boyd Holbrook leads an ensemble cast that includes Room breakout Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen and Olivia Munn.

Strahovski will play the mother to Tremblay, a troubled boy who is accidentally drawn into the conflict with the fierce alien creatures by his father — her ex-husband — played by Holbrook.

Strahovski, who has had runs on Dexter and 24: Live Another Day, next co-stars in Hulu’s buzzy Margaret Atwood adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale with Elisabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes. She also has two movies in the can: He’s Out There, directed by Dennis Iliadis, and the Marc Forster-helmed drama All I See Is You, the latter starring Blake Lively.

Strahovski is repped by Paradigm, McKeon/Myones Entertainment and Sue Barnett and Associates
